Scotscape Installs Living Wall and Green Roof
for Flagship M&S Store

July 2011

Scotscape has completed the installation of an ANSystem living wall and green roof for a new flagship Marks & Spencer store in Sheffield.

Described as the company’s greenest-ever store, this is the first of a number of new ‘Sustainable Learning’ stores that form part of Marks & Spencer’s ‘Plan A’ programme, which aims to make it the world’s most sustainable retailer by 2015 and to be carbon neutral by 2012.

The 17m x 5m green wall and sedum-planted green roof form an integral part of the building’s sustainable design, delivering not only additional insulation and improved energy efficiency, but also natural wildlife habitats.
Scotscape worked closely with green roof partners BBS and living wall partners ANS to deliver the project. Scotscape will also be responsible for the ongoing maintenance of both the roof and wall, with an agreed programme of monthly visits.

The store is set to achieve a BREEAM rating of Excellent, making it one of the most sustainable retail outlets in the UK. The Scotscape green roof and living wall help contribute to reduced carbon emissions and lower energy usage – which are 23% and 30% lower respectively than traditional comparable stores.

It is expected that these features will form a key part of future new-build and refurbishment
M&S stores, with a number of projects already planned.
